Many homeowners like it for the warmth it adds to a room as well as for its sustainable attributes because it is a quickly renewing, fast growing plant.
Kirei USA offers bamboo, wheatboard, cocoa tiles and Kirei board made from waste sorghum straw. Bamboo and other natural products typically are used for ceilings in bathrooms, kitchens, wine cellars and home offices, said John Stein, company president.
Costs for these products range from $7 to 20 per square foot and to as little as $1 per square foot for hemp.
Other unique ceiling options include Barrisol stretch systems, which are made of a unique polymer and available in a wide array of colors and shapes. It is great for adding drama to a tall space, such as a two-story foyer or cathedral or vaulted ceiling. Costs range from $20 to $45 per square foot.
If you just want to add some height to a room try a tray ceiling that adds the illusion of a larger and more open space. Tray ceilings work well with features like tin or even bamboo, which draw attention to the different depths.
Most commonly, designers use recessed tray ceilings where the outer edges of the ceiling are lower, with the highest point of the room being in the center. For ceilings that are plain and flat, the easiest way to create a tray effect is to add deep crown molding around the room’s edges.

The #1 New Year resolution is to go on a diet. You may have a better chance of keeping your resolution if you consider making your house lose weight! All of the Christmas decorations are down and it is a great time to step back and look at your home with fresh eyes.

Walk through your front door and pretend you are seeing your home for the first time. Is you home open & inviting? Is it hard to walk through the room? Do you have too much clutter? Now is a great time (since it is too cold to work in the yard) to spend some time getting rid of things that are no longer useful. Try selling them on the internet, at a garage sale, or donate them.

You may notice one room has too many things laying around. Try relocating some items to a different room or put them in drawers, closets, baskets, etc. If you have family pictures spread all over the house, try putting them on one wall. Use only one or two colors for the frames. An entry way or a hallway is a great space to use for your collection. Find a place for mail, keys, medicine, etc. that is handy but not right in sight. There are many items you can get to help you organize your important "stuff".

Start with one and you may find you can't stop...

Check out KarmaKraft.com. It is a digital fabric printing company that lets you upload your own fabric design online. You can create your own fabric for pillows, wall art, bedding, table linens, etc. They use reactive dyes for their cotton, linen and silk qualities and disperse dyes for the polyester, making the fabric vivid and washable.

There are no set-up fees or minimums. They even offer cut & sew services. Custom fabrics range from $20 to $32 per yard and the cut & sew services range from $10 to $18. Pretty cool!

While I was in Atlanta for the Window Fashions Expo I had a chance to listen to Suze speak. She was great...interesting & funny. She is much better live than on TV.

Of course, I had to buy her book and have her sign it!

Make a Room Feel Larger

Everyone wants their home to feel warm and inviting but we also want the room to appear larger. As a rule, we recommend mounting window treatments several inches above the window. For example, say you have an 8' ceiling height and you mount your window treatment under your crown molding or just below the ceiling, not only will the room appear larger but the ceiling height will appear taller as well.Another mistake a homeowner might make would be to add a cornice with a straight bottom and then mount that cornice at the top of the window. Below I have created a rendering with our "Minutes Matter Studio" graphic design software to illustrate the different look achieved when the cornice is mounted near the crown molding or ceiling opposed to mounting at the top of the window. See how much taller the ceiling height appears and how much larger the room looks.

Here is another design tip when trying to make a ceiling look higher. Add a shape to the bottom of the cornice. By adding movement to the bottom of the cornice it can trick the eye into moving up and down so the eye does not stop at the longest point of the cornice.

You could also accomplish extra height with drapery panels and a decorative rod. Notice the difference when you mount the drapery rod at the top of the window or when you mount the rod under the crown molding or near the ceiling.
